R370 and Beyond: Everything You Must Know About SASSA & the SRD Grant in South Africa (2026 Updated)
What Is SASSA and the SRD Grant?

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is the government body responsible for distributing social assistance to millions of South Africans.
Among all its grant programmes, none has attracted more attention in 2026 than the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 grant — a monthly lifeline for unemployed and low-income citizens.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the SRD grant, recognising its vital role in supporting more than 9 million vulnerable South Africans, with R35.2 billion allocated to extend the SRD grant at R370 per month.
SRD R370 Grant Extended to March 2027 — Official Confirmation
Today, 31 March 2026, marks the expiry of the current SRD legal framework; but the grant is not ending.
The extension has been confirmed by the government and will run from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, with the monthly payment remaining at R370.
Authorities have emphasised that regulatory amendments must be finalised before the March 2026 deadline to ensure uninterrupted payments to over eight million beneficiaries.
The social relief of distress grant is allocated an additional R36.4 billion to extend payments until 31 March 2027 at the current R370 per month per beneficiary, with the Social Development function's overall budget increasing by 4.2%, rising from R412.2 billion in 2025/26 to R466.4 billion in 2028/29.
SRD Grant Redesign: A Major 2026 Policy Shift
In his 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed a major shift in the future of South Africa's social protection system, signalling that the SRD grant will move from temporary crisis relief to a redesigned, long-term income support model.
The President explicitly stated: "This year, we will redesign the grant to more effectively support livelihoods, skills development, work opportunities and productive activity."
The redesign planned for 2026 will seek to align the grant more closely with employment-seeking criteria, with government prioritising an unemployment-focused income support model rather than a broad basic income scheme, driven by fiscal pressure from the R40 billion annual cost of the programme.
SRD R370 Eligibility Criteria (2026)
To qualify, applicants must meet all of the following:
Applicants must be South African citizens, permanent residents, asylum seekers, or holders of a special permit; aged between 18 and 60 years; unemployed or unable to work; earning no more than R624 per month; not receiving other social grants such as old-age pension or disability grants; and not receiving UIF unemployment benefits or NSFAS financial aid.
Important: Receiving the Child Support Grant does NOT disqualify you from the SRD.
SASSA only pays into a bank account registered in the exact name and ID number of the applicant. If you provide details belonging to someone else, the bank verification process will fail and your payment will be suspended.
How to Apply for the SRD R370 Grant
Applications are processed entirely online — no office visit required:
• Online portal: srd.sassa.gov.za
• WhatsApp: Save 082 054 0016 and send “Hi”
• USSD: Dial 12069277#
• Toll-Free Helpline: 0800 60 10 11
Applicants provide their valid South African ID number, contact details, and consent for verification checks. SASSA then verifies identity, residence, income levels, and unemployment status through cross-checks with national databases and financial systems. Once verified and approved, SASSA assigns a specific payment date to that beneficiary.
April 2026 Payment Dates
The March 2026 cycle was the last payment cycle in the 2025/2026 financial year. SASSA's schedule for permanent grants follows a staggered order:
Older Persons Grants are paid first, followed by Disability Grants, then Children’s Grants including Foster Care, Care Dependency, War Veterans, and Grant-in-Aid.
For April 2026 (new financial year), payment dates are:
| GRANT TYPE | APRIL 2026 DATE |
| Older Persons Grant | 2 April 2026 |
| Disability Grant | 7 April 2026 |
| Children’s Grants | 8 April 2026 |
| SRD R370 Grant | End of April (individual dates) |

SRD payments do not fall on one fixed day for all beneficiaries. The organisation distributes funds through multiple payment cycles, resulting in different payment dates per person. After processing, banks and payment providers take two to three business days to reflect funds in accounts.

SRD Grant Declined? Here’s How to Appeal
If your SRD grant was declined, you have the legal right to appeal.
A SASSA appeal allows your case to be independently reviewed if you believe the outcome was incorrect or based on incomplete or inaccurate information. Appeals are assessed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), an independent body operating under the Department of Social Development.
Common reasons for decline:
• Monthly income above R624 detected
• Linked to another SASSA grant
• Active UIF or NSFAS payments found
• Identity mismatch with Home Affairs records
• Duplicate application detected
How to appeal — step by step:
Visit srd.dsd.gov.za/appeals, enter your ID and phone number, verify with the OTP, select the declined month, choose a valid appeal reason, submit documents if required, and confirm your submission. Appeals must be lodged within 90 days.
If you were declined for multiple months, submit a separate appeal for each one. Follow up after 60 days by contacting ITSAA at 012 312 7727 or grantappeals@dsd.gov.za if you have not received a response.
TAKE AWAY POINT: Appeals submitted within 30 days are processed faster, even though the legal deadline is 90 days.

The Bigger Picture: SA Social Grants in 2026
More than 28 million unemployed and vulnerable individuals currently receive various forms of social assistance in South Africa, including old age pensions, disability grants, child support grants, and the SRD grant. The SRD grant itself represents the only consistent form of financial support for roughly 8 million beneficiaries nationwide.
An estimated 45% of the South African population relies on social grants or social relief of distress as a major source of income, including 13.2 million recipients of the child support grant and 4.3 million recipients of the old age grant.
