One of the biggest developments in 2026 is SASSA’s sweeping anti-fraud campaign. The agency is projecting R341 million in annual savings after identifying and removing thousands of ineligible beneficiaries.

Key upgrades include:
✓  Mandatory facial biometric verification for all SRD applicants
✓ Quarterly cybersecurity audits across all platforms
✓  24-hour security monitoring centre
✓  Upgraded encryption to protect user data
✓ Cross-database checks with SARS, UIF, GEPF, and Home Affairs
✓ Identity theft cases have dropped significantly  from approximately 1,100 cases in 2024 to around 500 between April and September 2025, confirming the system is working.
✓ SASSA also confirmed it has shut down over 70 of 150+ fraudulent websites mimicking its SRD platform.

Beneficiaries are warned: SASSA will never ask for your biometric data via SMS, phone calls, or unofficial representatives.

Biometric registration is now mandatory for all grant recipients. Those who fail to complete it risk having their payments temporarily suspended.

2026 Budget & Future of Social Grants

The Social Development budget will grow from R412.2 billion in 2025/26 to R466.4 billion by 2028/29 a 4.2% increase. The SRD grant has been allocated an additional R36.4 billion to fund payments until 31 March 2027.

In a landmark announcement during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on 12 February 2026, President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that the SRD grant would eventually evolve into a permanent unemployment support mechanism a major policy shift for millions of South Africans.

Treasury has made SASSA’s 2025/26 allocation conditional on improved biometric and income verification, more frequent eligibility reviews, and tighter controls saving an estimated R2 billion in 2026/27 and R1 billion in 2027/28.
