South Africa’s social assistance system continues to be a lifeline for millions of vulnerable citizens. With fresh updates rolling out in the 2026/27 financial year from grant increases to a major system overhaul staying informed is no longer optional. Whether you are a first-time applicant or a long-standing beneficiary, this guide covers everything you need to know right now.

The Role of SASSA in South Africa

The South African Social Security Agency was established to administer social grants and ensure that financial assistance reaches those who genuinely need it. Social grants remain the single-largest item in South Africa’s social development ledger, a quiet but powerful line in the budget that keeps millions of households afloat. Over the next three years, grant spending rises steadily, with R292.8 billion allocated in 2026/27 alone.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the Social Relief of Distress grant, recognising its vital role in supporting a vulnerable population of more than 9 million South Africans.

Confirmed Grant Increases From April 2026

Following the 2026 Budget Speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana confirmed the following increases effective from April 2026:

•The Old Age Grant increases from R2,315 to R2,400.

•The War Veterans Grant rises from R2,335 to R2,420.

•The Disability Grant increases to R2,400.

•The Foster Care Grant rises from R1,250 to R1,295.

•The Care Dependency Grant increases to R2,400.

•The Child Support Grant moves from R560 to R580.

•The Grant-in-Aid also increases to R580.

The SRD grant will remain at R370, with payments to continue until March 2027, with an additional R36.4 billion allocated to extend payments at the current rate.

April 2026 Payment Dates

SASSA has confirmed that SRD payments will be processed later in the month, with beneficiaries expected to receive funds between 23 and 24 April, and again between 29 and 30 April 2026.

For permanent social grants, SASSA spaces payments across three days to reduce overcrowding at pay points and ease pressure on the system. The agency pays as early in the month as possible, while avoiding weekends, Mondays, public holidays, and the first day of the month. Older Persons are paid first on 2 April, Disability on 7 April, and Children’s Grants on 8 April 2026.

The SRD Grant’s Evolution: From COVID Relief to a Permanent Job Seeker’s Grant

In a major policy development, President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed during the State of the Nation Address on 12 February 2026 that the long-running Social Relief of Distress grant will evolve into a permanent unemployment support mechanism.

This shift signals the government’s long-term commitment to addressing unemployment, with the redesigned grant set to link beneficiaries directly to job opportunities and active work-seeking support rather than providing unconditional open-ended relief.

SASSA’s Major 2026 Crackdown on Fraud

One of the biggest developments in 2026 is SASSA’s aggressive campaign to protect public funds and ensure grants reach only eligible recipients.

SASSA has already shut down 70 of the 150+ fraudulent websites detected, while rolling out facial biometric verification for all SRD applicants, quarterly cybersecurity audits across all platforms, a fully operational 24-hour security and monitoring centre, and upgraded encryption standards to protect user data.

By December 2025, the agency had checked the bank accounts of about 6 million clients and 8 million credit bureau clients. These checks flagged 291,581 grant beneficiaries for review, and a further 34,661 grants were cancelled, generating expected savings of R170.7 million by the end of 2025/26.

SASSA’s verification reforms are saving the state almost R30 million each month, with the agency projecting annual savings of R341 million once all fraudulent and ineligible grants are completely removed from the system.

Mandatory Biometric Verification: What Beneficiaries Must Do

Biometric verification is now a non-negotiable part of the SASSA grant process in 2026.

From 1 September 2025, SASSA implemented mandatory biometric enrolment fingerprint or facial recognition for all social grant types to strengthen security and eliminate fraud. This means all new and existing grant beneficiaries must complete their biometrics.

SASSA explained that biometric verification is a security measure used to confirm the identity of individuals through their unique biological traits. These traits are verified by comparing them with records captured by the Department of Home Affairs when an identity document was issued.

Key points every beneficiary must know:

Beneficiaries who do not complete biometric registration within the set time will have their grant payments delayed and temporarily stopped. Biometric capture is never done over the phone or by unofficial agents it must only be completed at official SASSA offices and approved registration locations.

Protecting Yourself from SASSA Scams in 2026

SASSA’s Acting CIO Jabulani Makondo warned that fraudsters were operating fake websites mimicking the SRD platform. When users searched for SASSA and landed on these fake sites, they entered their ID numbers, names, account details, and home addresses  information that was then used to apply for grants fraudulently on their behalf.

Always verify that the web address is srd.sassa.gov.za before entering any personal information. Never share your banking PIN, OTP, or ID number with anyone claiming to assist you with your grant outside of official SASSA platforms.
