The SRD R370 Grant: Current Status and Future Direction

The SASSA SRD R370 grant has been confirmed to continue at the same rate of R370 per month, as part of an extended relief measure running until 31 March 2027.

In a major policy shift, President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed at the 2026 State of the Nation Address that the SRD grant will be redesigned to function as a job seeker’s grant, linking beneficiaries to employment opportunities rather than providing open-ended relief.

Around 8.2 million people currently benefit from the SRD grant, with 26.5 million grant recipients overall across all SASSA programmes.

SRD Grant Eligibility Requirements in 2026

To qualify for the SRD R370 grant, applicants must meet all of the following:

Key 2026 System Changes to Know

SASSA has rolled out compulsory biometric enrolment for all new grant applications and introduced a self-service portal for life certification, reducing pressure on local offices.

The agency’s ongoing grant review process is saving the government approximately R44 million per month — around R0.5 billion annually — by targeting fraud and ensuring grants reach only eligible beneficiaries.

Periodic verification has also been introduced, meaning recipients may need to reconfirm their eligibility at certain intervals to maintain payment continuity.

Tips for Avoiding Payment Delays

1. Keep banking details updated on the SASSA system at all times.

2. Use only a bank account registered in your own name.
Check your application status regularly before your payment window.

3. Avoid third-party websites and only use official SASSA platforms.

4. Contact SASSA immediately if payment hasn’t reflected within 2–3 business days of your confirmed date.
